(3) Meeting with Senroku Uehara
January 15, 1926 by Perim
To the seminarians of ValsaliceThe letter was written at the Red Sea and enclosed a wonderful song called "Dal Mar Rosso, From the Red Sea." The text states that he became acquainted with Uehara Senroku, who later became the first president of Hitotsubashi University. He majored in European medieval history and sociology at the University of Vienna, and offered to teach the group Japanese himself on board, becoming their first Japanese language teacher.
Dear Valsalice people,
Aren't you ashamed?! The sun is up here, and you are still asleep! (Omitted) Right now, we are out at sea. Wherever we look, there is sky and sea!
This time, we present to you a photograph taken with a man named Uehara Senroku as we were heading to Japan. This kind young teacher volunteered to teach us the mysterious beauty of the Japanese language. How wonderful is God's providence! We have come quite far and can understand some of the text. Thank God! May God reward this benefactor with the grace of faith. (Omitted)
On board with Uehara Senroku Your Brother, Father V. Cimatti
Testimony of Senroku Uehara (recorded on January 19, 1969)
"It was me who suggested I help him with his Japanese language studies. "This is truly God's providence," Father Cimatti said immediately. From then on, I began giving Japanese lessons for one or two hours every day."
